Introduction

Hi.

My name is Damien (though I go by the handle of QuiteRationalDad), and welcome to the I Don't Need Faith To Be An Atheist blog site.

This blog site will be dedicated response to the book "I Don't Have Enough Faith To Be An Atheist" by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek, hence the title of this blog.
However, I will also be writing about modern atheism in general, with a particular focus on how modern atheism is the most rational and honest of all theistic viewpoints.

Yes, the book is a few years old now, but given it is one of the seminal texts that Christians use when debating atheists, the tactics used in the book are fairly typical of modern Christian apologetics, and there is no proper, chapter-by-chapter dissection and takedown of it (not that I could find anyway), I decided to write my own.

Posts will be sporadic, but I plan to write as I progress through the book, and give feedback from a rational atheist's point of view.

To begin the story of why this book, it begins as such: One day, I was having a stand-up debate with a Creationist. I had just come out as atheist to the pastor of my church, and this Creationist came up and challenged me on a few points.

One of his repeated points was, "Damien, don't tell me that as an atheist, you don't have faith. Everyone has faith in something!"

He then proceeded to tell me that I have faith:

a. When I sit on a chair.
b. When I drive on the road.
c. In my wife's fidelity.
d. In the sun coming up each morning.

I told him that I don't have faith, I have reasonable expectation in the objects and circumstances I find myself in.

a. I expect a chair to hold my weight. That's what chairs are designed for.
b. I expect other road users to obey the road rules and keep their car on their side of the road, just like they expect me to..
c. I expect my wife to be faithful, just like she expects me to be faithful.
d. The sun has never failed to rise. I'll worry about it on the day it doesn't.

At the end of the impromptu debate, I blessed him in the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and he recommended me to read IDHEFTBAA (my reciprocal recommendation was Letter To A Christian Nation by Sam Harris).
